The Monday feature of the Worldly Saints blog focuses on a story from the sports world – current or historic. The point is to recognize athletes who are using their sports and athletic abilities to further the kingdom of God or to show how some athletes are wasting their days by not giving God the glory.
I am going to deviate from the typical “serious” sports posting and have a little fun.
You ever noticed how the mascots for Christian schools usually is one of the following: Eagles, Crusaders, Knights, Golden Eagles, Saints, Deacons, etc.
Even though those names are noble, they are also so predictable, in my opinion. In fact, you might be able to look at the school’s name and mascot and predict whether it is a private Christian school or not. And yet, we have so many good options in the Bible for mascots. Why be satisfied with the same ole’ mascot for your Christian school? How about one of the following? I will use names of Kansas towns as my template:
• Andover Apostles (That one is for my non-cessasionist friends.)
• Carbondale Camels
• Freeport Fox
• Iola Ibex
• Junction City Judges
• Kansas City Conquest
• Leavenworth Leviathan
• Maize Mighty Men
• Manhattan Millennium
• Pittsburg Prophets (Andrea, my wife, said they should have a strong debate team with that name.)
• Rose Hill Romans
• Salina Sons of Thunder
• Tampa Tribulation
• Topeka Talking Donkeys (Ok – that’s not a very “mean” mascot, but it is funny right?)
Just saying …
