Have you heard the story behind the above-mentioned Christmas song? It comes from a poem entitled “Christmas Bells” – written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in the late 1800’s.

As the story goes, Henry’s wife had died in a terrible fire a few years before and just a few weeks before this song was written, Henry was informed that his son had been shot during the Civil War, which led to his son’s paralysis.

Henry was a man acquainted with grief. And the phrase “And in despair I bowed by head” summarizes a man who was suffering.

So, on Christmas Day in 1863, he wrote this song to communicate his grief and his trust in the Lord.
