Why Jesus Died – (35) To Give Marriage a Deeper Meaning and (36) To Create a Passion for Good Works

One more week to go in our series on 50 reasons Jesus came to die from John Piper’s book The Passion of Jesus Christ.

35. To give marriage its deepest meaning (Eph 5:25) – When Paul tells husbands to love their wives as Christ loved the church, our calling as husbands only makes sense with the depiction of the cross. Jesus loved the church to the point of His own death and did not cast them away. Husbands are called to suffer on behalf of their wives and live for their benefit.

36. To create a people passionate for good works (Tit 2:14) – We are saved for good works and not by good works (Eph 2:8-10). His death on the cross creates a zeal in all believers to do good works for Him. The believer is not saved by doing good works but his salvation is verified by his passion to do them.
