Why Jesus Died – (25) To Become for Us the Place to Meet God and (26) To Redefine Priesthood

We are more than half-way done with our synopsis of John Piper’s book The Passion of Jesus Christ: 50 Reasons Jesus Came to Die.

25. To become for us the place where we meet God (John 2:19-21) – Piper paraphrases I John 2:19-21 this way: “Kill me, and I will become the global meeting place with God” (pg. 68). Jesus replaced the Temple as it passed away and gave way to Him. And Jesus is better than the Temple (Matt 12:6). Jesus changed all these categories completely. The center is no longer Jerusalem or the Temple; it is Him.

26. To bring the Old Testament priesthood to an end and become the eternal high priest (Heb 7:23-27; 9:24-26; 10:11-12) – One of the bloodiest scenes (literally) in Biblical times was the days that priests were offering animal sacrifices to atone for people’s sins. The animals served as worthy substitutes but were never sufficient. But they always lacked total perfection that was present in Jesus Christ. Jesus became that Priest and sacrifice. He did so and was able to do so because He was sinless He was the final sacrifice for sin and he ended the bloody scenes once and for all.
