Why Jesus Died – (15) To Make Us Holy and (16) To Give Us a Clear Conscience

There is a 15th and 16th reason Jesus came to die according to John Piper’s book The Passion of Jesus Christ:

15. To make us holy, blameless, and perfect (I Cor 5:7; Col 1:22; Heb 10:14) – Every day is a struggle and fight to become holy. Quite often we look at our affection or devotion and think of our own wretchedness (Rom 7:24). However, because of Jesus’ death on the cross we have already been made perfect. We are both righteous in God’s sight and are in the process of being made righteous!

16. To give us a clear conscience (Heb 9:14) – Dirty consciences are as old as Adam and Eve’s sin in the Garden of Eden. And all throughout the O.T. as sacrifices were made to atone for sin, the guilt of the conscience was alleviated but never permanently settled. Without the blood of Christ spilled on the cross, our conscience would continue to condemn us.
